Why do pit bosses care so much about catching counters?

If a pit boss doesn't get any incentive pay for catching card counters, nor gets fired for letting the MIT team play without giving them heat, why should they even care about catching counters? Assuming it's a big casino that has enough money that a few lucky gamblers won't put them out of business, the pit boss doesn't need to care about the casino's profit. They should just stick to making sure the dealers are doing their jobs correctly, watching for real cheaters, resolving disputes, etc.

I'm sure they are told the CC's have an advantage X (over exaggerated). With that advantage, they'll lower our profits and we won't be able to report the highest results possible to shareholders. If we don't get $XX EPS, our shareholders will be unhappy and no raises, bonuses, etc.

I imagine some BS like that being spewed.

I've wondered that myself. One store I play at is notorious for booting out counters that may win a grand or less. Meanwhile I've seen ploppies take them for several grand at a time. I guess they're more worried about intent than they are actual results.

To add to Sonny's comment, some pb's are big time company people or are looking to climb the corporate ladder. Spotting someone with an edge, however slight (or even non-existent) it might be, gets the pb noticed by management in a positive way.

Most casinos have profit sharing plans in which bosses DO get incentive pay. Sometimes it's the casino manager only, sometimes shift bosses; sometimes even the pit bosses.

There is no casino in the world that would NOT fire a pit boss that would knowingly allow a member of the MIT team to play.

Seems to me there is a balancing act here. Bosses could find themselves backing off a potentially good "paying" customer while being agressive in efforts to weed out AP's or counters.

Which has been discussed before. How much effort should be put into catching/ID'ing a counter when a large majority of them are not a major threat to most casinos' bottom line.

And wannabe's that don't put in the effort are actually more profitable to the casino than most ploppies due to their bet spreads.
