Are there other women out there in the same situation?

zoomie,

I am envious that your g.f. has a switchblade.

I miss the Italian [stiletto] switchblade that I had once had.

The basic problem is that they are illegal, and courts treat
them as illegal concealed weapons on par with a handgun.

I really really wish that I could obtain a new (or old) one.

A switchblade knife has a blade that is spring-loaded.
That is distinguished from the (legal) "gravity knife"
which opens by a whip-like action of the hand.
Hers is probably more gravity knife, but she is very experienced with it and it comes out quickly when she needs it.

Thanks everyone

Thanks for all your information, concerns and suggestions, however for a late birthday present I received a Ruger .380 LCP and love the light weight of it! I will be taking a training course soon. Thanks again, Red

What ideals? That carrying a deadly weapon, which could be used against her, is a good idea?

Switchblade, ballistic knife, brass knuckles are 3 weapons with a bad history, and if you get caught with those things the police and courts will make an example of you.

If you are male and can use your hands to begin with, a kubotan is an excellent choice.
Thanks, Auto Monk, for the tip on the kubotan. What an innocuous, yet potentially lethal little hunk of metal.

No.....its a weapon to be used responsibly... a knife is deadly also, as is a baseball bat.....Used properly it wouldnt be used against her.....
A good idea?.........no just her idea....free will...second amendment....yada yada...
Yea i like the sound of that>>>( Her idea, her free will, her right) !!!!!
I was just expressing my opinion . I side with her......
Anybody see anything wrong with having an opinion?????

I should have known better

Now just hold on guys, I should have known better in thinking this subject would not go unscathed.

Yes, it is my right to make my own choices. I have been around guns my whole life and I can definitely handle myself. I have not taken this decision lightly and will go through all the required training necessary.

Final…I travel constantly by car and motorcycle alone and this will give me a piece of mind. My life has been threatened before; there are too many freaking weirdo’s out there and I aim to protect myself and “yes” if my life is in danger I will pull.

Let’s please just end this thread.:gun:

I would LOVE to have a casino 80 miles from me. I have to drive over 100 miles to the closest one, which takes about an hour and a half, and over two hours if I want to go play Blackjack Switch (only one casino in Northern California has it).

I hear you on driving too much. With gas prices the way they are, SO and I are probably going to have to curtail our trips  I have Onstar with my car now, but I still always make sure I have a charged cell phone and/or am on a highway with call boxes. So far, so good (knock on wood).

SO is going to be taking me to the gun range so that I can also get comfortable with it, too, and learn to shoot better.

Avenger, I'm not sure if your post was directed at me, as I'm not sure where Red is, but I'm the one in California, and my gun is staying home :)
OT but, do you ever go to River Rock Casino in Sonoma? That's my home store.

Red,

BTW I am 6'3" and 250 pounds. I can see that some people would love to inflate their egos by trying to take me on. Anyways what I find works is being able to give a nasty look. For some reason it makes people back off. If that doesn't work I did study Tae Kwon Do. Here's a tip on self defense. Use your elbows and knees! A knee in the crotch and an elbow in the jaw would usually back off anyone. BTW I have never been in a fight in my adult life.

I partially agree, the front elbow is very effective and surprisingly easy to do. But I would consider all the alternatives before striking anyone with my knee. It's easy to injure the knee and if you do, it will be difficult to get away.

Good point about the bigger guys attracting fights intended to show off. A small guy trying to impress a girl is just as willing to lose a fight as win one. Something to keep in mind though, is that while drunk guys with egos are willing to lose fights, street people are not, so if a small guy approaches you with robbery intent you can be certain he is armed or has a lot of backup, because he knows he will probably lose a fair fight. Thus assume he has planned ahead for an unfair one.

self defense, guns, knives: not worth it

I am guessing I have about a 1% chance of ever being robbed. If I carry an average of $5000, I can expect to lose $50 over my lifetime from being robbed. If I just hand over the money I will be better off than: paying for self defense, purchasing a gun, etc.

I have a hunting background and have shot pistols. I am an above average sized guy and wrestled in Highschool. Still, even if I were a 99 to 1 favorite in a serious fight with a gun or a knife, there is a chance of the worst possible outcome: Death.

IMO the best thing you can do is give up your wallet if ever confronted in a bad situation (preferably one of your wallets with little cash.) Money isn't worth the risk of losing it all. Women have another thing to worry about, I guess I would suggest valet or security help if you feel unsafe. A gun also seems reasonable in your case. Hope you never have to use it.

This kind of statement is what's wrong with the world today..you are missing the point. It's the principle of the thing... it is not the money.. it's just money. But when you start letting people get away with things just to avoid a little pain and suffering... you end up with the world we have today. A world full of a bunch of whiny nambie pambies and... lawyers. :whip:

I recently had a guy named "jojo" steal an Iphone from me... I tracked him down and got it back.. but that's another story. :)
