carrying money to vegas

I put this in the vegas section because its the only place i fly to get to gambling.

I'm interested if anyone knows, what the TSA policy is at the inspection checkpoints. I have been putting my wallet (money) in a backpack and letting it go through the xray machine. I hate doing this.

Is it ok to leave non metallic objects in your pocket, such as a wallet or a roll of cash? Or do you need to load everything onto the xray machine?

Keep it on your body but break it into groups of no more then 5-10K. Over on RGE21.com Victor mentioned that 20K packs can set off metal detectors. I don't know if that is true or not but I have followed his advice and always keep my money in small packs (10K or less) spread around in different places on my body and have never set off a detector even when carrying 6 figures. You can legally carry as much $ on a domestic flight as you want but I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle if an agent noticed it. Always declare (10K+) on international flights though. On a side note chips can set off detectors and even when they are packed in your baggage they can confuse inspectors (outside of Las Vegas) which leads to inspections. I've had my luggage searched because of chips before so I now keep them in a ziplock bag as protection against sticky fingered inspectors.

After watching the show "Cops", I always took the term "on your person" as up the cornhole...apparently I've been mislead by TV!

I do not carry 10K on me ever.

But my wallet bulges out of my pocket noticably whether its 20 $1 bills or 20 $100 bills for example, so i didnt want to have the TSA "wand guy" interogate me for "whats in your pocket". I think ill just split it up into 4 pieces and put them in each of my jean pockets. Thanks for the info! :cool2:

I've carried $10-$15K many times in a pelvis pouch, never had a problem at airport security. It would be very hard for a robber or pickpocket to get at too.

Once I'm in a casino I move it all or at least $5K out to a pocket, because you can't go down your pants at the table for at least two reasons. It is a slight time-waster to have to go to a bathroom stall when entering and exiting a store, but it's better than the alternative.

Hey what do you do if you are on the road with a ton of cash and you have to go to the hospital? Apparently it's common to be ripped off by EMT's and hospital personnel when you are transported to the ER.

Wong has a nice pouch on his website. It can hold $20-$30k per pouch. I've heard that people sometimes have trouble with the zipper breaking though. You could also make your own custom pouch with a little material and some velcro. That way you could make it fit perfectly to your body. When you look for a money pouch, make sure you get one with a plastic zipper or velcro closure. Many of the nice ones have metal zippers which will set off the metal detector at the airpoirt.

Casual baggy clothes and cargo pants are obviously your friends here. I also have a few extra internal pockets I have sewn in strategic places.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I didn't think any AP's kept their money in a wallet. Rubberbands or bank straps seem to be the method of choice of most AP's I know.

When im on a plane it doesnt really matter where i keep it. The stewardess isnt going to be dealing me a game of blackjack on my tray table. :cool2:

I think the whole situation is best avoided in the first place by simply opening a B of A account. There are ten branches in Reno alone, one right across from the Circus. There are at least that many in Vegas as well.

If you get the Amex Gold Card you can order up to $2500 in $500 denominations Traveler's checks every 14 days for minimal cost, mailed right to your door. I think 3-day delivery is $10 and next day is $20, I chose the 2-day option, $16.95 I think it was. That helps to cut down on the bulk and theft/loss issue a great deal, supplemented with $2 or 3-k in hundreds carried in your front pocket, folded over once, or flat in the bank envelope. Cargo pants or shorts are a good option too. I like to use the hotel safe if at a reputable property and I have been with BOA for almost 20 years. Bob is right that they are great for Vegas and you can't beat them for rapid funds movement between accounts and bill payment either.
