Ever hit a hard 17 against dealer ace?

Works OK in practice. Don't know if I could do it at the tables. Only four cards help the seventeen.

Again: Seems to be at least as good as standing pat. Then there's the occasional four card to 21.

Maybe in an especially low count deck would be more helpful. In practice even hitting the hard 18 hasn't been as awful as I thought it would. In certain low decks anyway.

All the time. You a'int getting too far with a 17, and you can't bust...

Again, there is reason behind my name

Yes, I have hit a hard 17 vs and Ace and the results are not that different to staying or even surrendering vs an ace.
You just plain have a good size underdog hand and staying in most situations will lose you less money than hitting.
I hate getting a 17.

Primarily, in 1 and 2 deck games in a fairly modest low count, especially if dealer H17, ill hit 17 vs A from time to time.

Hi,

Sure it is mathematically correct to hit hard 17 with a moderate low count, but it isn't worth it. Almost every time I have done this it has gotten me attention. One time the dealer even got so excited he called all the pit bosses over to look at my 21.

Good luck.

Well, i agree completely this play just isnt worth the attention it would draw . Plus the difference isnt that much different anyway.

If one is still playing at a negative count enough to justify hitting a hard 17 vs Ace, it's at a min bet and whatever floats your boat.

At least there is an index number for it.

Hitting a hard 18 vs Ace, is insane as far as I know.

Although I do love hitting 3+cards 17's vs Ace in Spanish 21. People freak - it's so much fun lol.

I agree, people do freek out. One of the casinos lets me surrender multi-card 17's v A, so I take that rout. I get more "why are you playing Spanash21 if you aren't making the Match the Dealer bet?" than I care to hear.

Excerpt from Barfarkel June 2005 Trip Report -

At another point in this marathon four-hour session, I drew a seventeen vs. a dealer’s ace in a minus six true count. Grif urged me to hit it, but I declined his advice and stood. The next card was a deuce, which would have given me nineteen. The dealer flipped a seven in the hole for eighteen, and I lost a hand I would have won. I cannot remember the last time I hit a hard seventeen, and was even less likely to do so now, especially in my fatigued condition, but I later checked that extreme index for seventeen vs. an ace in a h17 double-deck game, and it turned out to be minus seven – not quite negative enough to hit, but Grif’s instincts were right as usual - and for such an extreme play his level-2 ZEN count was a wee bit more accurate than my level-1 count.

Don't we all! I've been accused of "wasting my time" by not playing that sidebet.

So to keep everybody happy, I just play it! :cool2:

But hitting 5 and 6 card Hard 17's against a high dealer card in Spanish21 is yet another story.

Those practitioners of the dark art of Span21 know of what I speak.

I asked for a hit on a hard 17 against an ace (count was minus 8). the dealer skipped me. so I called her out. She called the pit boss. He finally sided with me but said are you sure you don't want to double down? I got a 3 and the dealer had an 8 under. One to remember. Maybe I shoulda doubled! lol. This bet is not necessarily a winner but better than standing. Certainly not worth a double.

That index play has virtually no value, and when you do it and a good card comes out like a three or a four it looks really really bad.
I will do it on rare occasion, but then I have to explain to everyone there that I never used to do it, until someone told me that 17 is the mother-in-law hand, the one you'd like to hit but you don't - and I tell everyone that ... "Since I heard that, every once in awhile I like to just smack that bitch!"
