Tipping the Dealer

Our discussion about drinks brought up an interesting point, tipping...

1. How much do you tip.
2. How often
3. Who do you tip.
4. Other (ie. certain cercumstances do you tip more, less, etc.)
 
i'll go first :)
1. $1
2. once/night
3. waitress only
4. i may tip the dealer if i get a big win and the pit is near
 
Subject says Tipping the dealer, but questions ask for who you tip.
So I assume you want info on tips to both the dealer and the waitress.

1 - $1
2 - Waitress - every drink; Dealer - about every 30 min - 1 hr
3 - Waitress/Dealer
4 - Dealer - more if they're friendly; less if they act like an @ss
Waitress - more if service is prompt; less or no tip only if service is ridiculously slow (ex: my drink is empty for an extended period)

NOTE 1:
I try not to let my win/lose rate affect my tip, since you're tipping for service, but I do tend to be more generous when winning.

NOTE 2:
I don't tip the Pit - although I know some people do.
I figure they should 'tip' me (with comps)

Me, too. For a nice win, or if I've been highly entertained.

EVERYBODY wants a tip! At the cashier's cage there's a box for tips, and people put money in it! Why on earth.....?

The coat check person does provide some small service. Even though I'm in Minnesota, I always leave my jacket in the car.
 
A pink a drink. (I always tip the waitress pink for symbolic reasons, and because they can get me the top shelf stuff. It is worth it.)

I will toke the dealer at the store where I get my cashable comp when the PC is watching. Also a pink, on naturals over $50 bet. It is also worth it, and this I have verified. The PC has complete control over how much I get comped, and being most of them are dual-rate they treat non-tokers like crap and with tokers they are willing to share the casino's money. I'll pay between $5-10 in tokes to the dealer a night and get about $100 in cash equivalent comp.

If I am away from a home store or anonymous I toke very very little, and only if I believe I can get something in return.
 
I usually "tip early" because I think it improves their attitude.

Dealer: $1 after 1/2 hr if they seem good & friendly. Maybe every hour after that. Usually by a bet but sometimes ask their preference.

Pit staff/Cashier: forget about 'em

Waitress: Sometimes $2 first drink ... hopefully she watches for me after that, $1 after that.

Coat Check: $1 per coat if used, but rather leave coats in car.

Wait Staff in restaurant: 15%-20% depending on service Even if meal is comped.

More if I'm winning, but am just a recreational player who figures these people mostly live off their tokes.

1. normally $25, sometimes $100
2. got a BJ, Doubling-up the maximum
3. Dealer/Waitress for good service
4. poor players (normally $100 each), last time 2 ladies and one man playing on the same table, when i decide to leave, i give $200 each then i cash my winnings $4000

Thats funny,in another post you say you play two hands at a private table.
 
Waitresses, buck a drink.

Dealers, I try to put a $1 bet out for them soon after they get to the table, preferably at the same time as I have opportunity for an elevated bet. Then try to tip the dealer again at some undetermined point down the road.

I also sometimes tip a couple bucks when coloring up if I had a good session.

(Note that I'm trying to reign in my tipping, though. One problem I've sometimes had is "steaming" on the tips. If the dealer bet keeps losing, I'll keep tipping until he/she can collect. That's just stupid).

Yeh, but that doesn't mean he plays exclusively private tables. He could play both.
As to tipping.....NEVER! No i'm not a hard ass or anything, but you are not allowed to tip the dealers over here. This is to discourage any form of dealer bias towards the player. This would be more difficult in itself as they don't take a hole card either, but i suppose there are other situations like mis-payments and not reporting counters.

Do dealers there make a decent wage?Dealers in the US get close to half their income from tips?Sometimes more.
 
In honesty, i'm not entirely sure. I seem to remember talking to one a while back on a social level and getting told that they make about £6-7/hour ($12-14), and having done menial jobs before that's a livable amount over here.
Not being allowed to tips does stop some advantages, but many counters lose their advantage due to over-tipping, so as with most rules it swings both ways.

When it comes to the waitresses, only cheap asses don't give them anything. For me, dealers are purely on the basis of their attitude, which usually has a part in how much fun the game is. I usually get a tip or two out there early for the mood...you never know, a dealer may be having a crappy day or had to put up with some shitty people, a tip or bet for them can help with that.

It's all about attitude and the aura...some people completely ignore those factors, which can have an effect on a counter, not just regular players.
 
1. In general, $1 or a white chip (same thing). Occasionally I'll just drop some change in the cup if it's <$1 (on my cheapass days). I know it's a service, blah blah blah, but occasionally $.50 for a water is all I can afford =) Then again, I've also balanced the scales. I was once up 10x my buy in at a poker table after 2 hands (what a night!). I tipped the waitress $5 each time. I ended up $250 that night, so I didn't mind.

2. Waitress: With each drink. Dealer: After a great win, or end of their shift. (For dealers, I've heard lots of people say to tip 1 Unit / hour). You can get cover-playish with tips. Tip at the end of a shoe "to bless the next shoe", etc.

3. See above. I've also twice dropped $1 into the cashier slot, when I chased out for $x01. $301 and $201. I didn't want the looney. ;)

4. If you hit the progressive jackpot in Carib. Stud, give the dealer a few greens. =)

Hotel maid: buck a day.

I generally try to avoid tipping wherever possible (don't use bellhops/valets, etc.), but I decided grudgingly that that has to be one of the shittiest jobs out there, so a little tip is probably worth it.

One of my best friends is fairly high up in the housekeeping Dept at The Taj. He says his girls biggest peeve is that most people that stay several days tip only once,at the end of the stay.Keep in mind that housekeepers don't work 7 days,so you might end up tipping someone who cleaned your room once,and stiffing the person who cleaned it every day.
I leave a tip every day-usually whatever pocket change I have-between $1 and $2.
