First up, card counting is not cheating. Its not illegal either. It's just using your knowledge and memory to turn the odds of the game to your favour.
Every game in every casino in the world all have odds in the favour of the casino, and no-one calls that cheating, do they?
I'm not that experienced in casinos, being in a very casino-poor area, but the only cheating (using your definition of it) I've seen would be me Wonging into a rich deck to start playing BS. I'm not quite up to counting in a casino environment yet, but I try.

I don't consider card-counting as cheating.
But, it's hard to tell if someone is counting. After all, you don't count on your fingers. Varying bets can be an indicater, but not on its own. I've seen people vary their bets, but were playing very stupid -- not even close to basic strategy. Counting cards will make you vary from BS but not that wildly.

liber8 d, Wonging is not cheating either. I count cards and work at a casino and have never seen anyone cheating at BJ. In fact, I have never seen anyone else, other than myself, who was counting cards.
At the casino I work at I know there were a couple people banned before I got into counting or started working there, they were banned because of counting. They were playing high limit and won several 1000 at least. I on the other hand usually don't bet more than $50 so I don't think they care too much about me winning a couple hundred here and there. Of course I can't play at the same casino I work at.
I've heard of a couple people who got kicked out of the poker room for cheating. One time the rake box wasn't fully secure so most of the rake was dropping on the floor so the guy sitting in seat 1 was picking it up for himself. He was banned but later on was allowed back in. Another guy got caught taking chips off the poker table and he was banned (you're not allowed to take any of your chips off the table unless you're leaving or buying food). And the third guy only got a warning. He was selling stolen suits in the casino's parking lot and was arrested. Not sure if he had to go to jail or just pay a fine but all the casino did was tell him not sell stolen merchandise on their property or he'll be banned next time. He's one of the regulars so I guess aslong as he's not stealing from the casino and keeps paying rake (in poker) they'll be happy.

Remember one fact about those of us who are beginners, casinos have gone to great lengths to convince us and the general public that counting is cheating.

I believe that he is “casino person” (walking sabotage) that is instructed by somebody in casino industry to write books in which he constantly tries to prove that card counting doesn't work, and always offers "modified" basic blackjack strategies that suppose to "save" you money.

Hi everybody 
I am very new to this forum and gambling. Our union had a outing to the casino and I discovered BlackJack while there. It was a Thursday afternoon and things were pretty slow. I sat at a table who had, what I assumed was a local lady who often played and a great dealer. Both of them helped me a lot and I ended up winning more than I had initially put down to bet with. It was a great first experience and the game really intreagued me.
I went home and went to this website, which the lady I was playing with recomended, read a lot, played the stratigy engine and ended up purchasing Casiono Verite and 2 books with most of my winnings.
Since then I have been to the casino with my boyfriend. I was only playing with $120 at first. I am wining 50% of the time. Even after making some very bad rookie mistakes, being up over twice what I putr down only to loose it ALL before I quit because I lost what I was prepaired to loose that night.
Two other times I doubled my $ ad had enough sense to go home. So far I am ahead $250.

It has been pointed out already that counting is NOT cheating...It's not illegal....but it is unacceptable in casinos though they cannot do anything to a counter theoretically other than ban him from BJ in that casino or possibly completely ban him from the casino itself!
Neither is "hole carding" or "first basing" illegal. That's just taking advantage of information that a sloppy dealer offers up to alert players.
Cheating to me (or stealing) that can happen at the table is something that I've not seen but once. That happened when a very clumsy player tried to cap a bet with an extra red chip. He was caught and escorted away from the table. What happened to him, I do not know.

Split8's...they are basically the same thing.....getting a glimpse of the dealer's hole card because of sloppy card-handling. I've gotten shots at this at two different times. First, when the card is dealt from a handheld pitch game. The other times, it's been when a dealer uses the hole card to "flip" the up-card over.
Although usually once during a long session, I'll see a dealer get confused and flip the hole card up and show it to everyone!

Thanks, Mike. I usually play a shoe game and I like 3rd base.....occasionally 1st base. I'll have to keep my eyes open for any bonus they'll give me. However, the dealers where I play seem to be well trained and careful. They also seem to have plenty of breaks. This summer I played with a dealer who admitted she had been up most of the night drinking. She was very tired....yawning like crazy but still careful. She did give me plenty of good cards, though, and I had a nice win.
I remember remarking to her that I should have recognized the flow of good hands and bet more to win more. She replied that I could have lost more, also. Good point.

I get this feeling I did not pose this question very well.
I did not mean counting as in Lo/Hi cards I was refering to the dealer not adding up the counts of the hands played. I have been very impressed by the staff and whole atmosphere at the casino I have been going to. As someone new to all of this I was wondering if acceleraterd play was a tactic used by casinos. Many people left the table after they saw what was happening. I just wish I was savey enough to have done the same.

She was dealing so fast there was barely time to see the cards let alone count their totals. My original post was suppose to be put to the gentleman who stated he was a dealer and they he also played the game elsewhere too.pamelarose said:

Pamela....You have control as a player. If the play is too fast, don't be pressured into accepting the dealer's count of your hand. Do not make your hit/stand decisions before you are comfortable with what your own hand count is. If they fly too fast in counting the dealer's hand, STOP them and count them for yourself also.
Personally, I like fast play. However, if you are playing for comps, time at the table is a primary factor and in that case, slow play is what you want.
As for dealers INTENTIONALLY miscounting....sure, it's "possible" but highly unlikely. I can't imagine the trouble the casino could get into for using those tactics.
