He couldn't read, but he could count to fifty without making a mistake. My guess is that Miss Kitty taught him card counting.

I think it took him a long time to get to five..... without mistakes.

I know he stopped at fifty because he got stumped after fingers, toes, arms, legs, and head, frontwards and backwards.

Miss Kitty won in a different way. In one episode she showed Sam the cards
up her sleave!! Sam smiling cooly.
