Double Deck BJ Penetration

Hey -

I've typically been playing 6 deck games...I'm thinking of playing a little double deck but want to make sure I don't play a losing game. Using Hi-Lo couting system, what kind of penetration do you want to see in order to know the game is beatable?

Assume decent rules....DAS, H17, Resplit Aces.

The game at El Cortez is about 75%, and everyone says its very good pentration.
The game at Imperial Palace has 50%, and is said to be bad.

I pretty much agree with the boys here. 2/3 pen on H17 and 60% on S17 is about my cutoff point assuming we're talking about DOA, that is.

The lesser the pene, the bigger the spread to compensate.
So 50% on 2D IS playable, but use a 1-20 spread. (see ZGI) zg

Z.G. is correct.
The spread is geared to the penetration, more than the rules in play.

Generally with good rules and 60& pen' 6-1 is a good spread.
If you are playing a really poor game, a la Northern Nevada,
you would need at least 10 to one OR 80% pen'

In general it is best to avoid DD games because your play will always be subject to virtually automatic "skill checks" by the surveillance drones.

If you play DD games, you will need comfortable walking shoes, as 45 minutes is a substantial session for any one casino session.

Adding a warning

What Zengrifter and Flash said is correct, you must spread more to make up for bad pen, but with that you have to accept increased variance.
You spread more and on good days you might win more but on bad days you will lose more. You spread more and you need a greater bankroll to keep your ROR the same.

To me, that one or two additional rounds you might get during a hi-count in a double deck game with good pen is golden. I often play in a casino where I can get 75-80% pen on their 6 deck shoe but only 50% on their double deck, and have only played the DD when their is a rare dealer who gives decent pen.

yea - i just got back from the casino...they have a $15 min on DD, but there was always at least 3 other people playing and with no mid-shoe entry I figured it wasn't worth it. But the dealer was definitely cutting well over 50% of the shoe...I'd say closer to 2/3 or 70% was being dealt out...so I may try to get over there when it's less busy and see if I can get some good cuts out of the dealers.

Understanding that point has been instrumental in reducing my frustration, increasing my patience, and improving my results.

Good penetration can make a huge difference. There are games in the Midwest where 1-10 is not a strong game, and I've seen games where 1-4 would mean more than 2 units an hour.
