#1

I want to learn BS and minimize my losses and give my self a shot at winning. Does anyone have any tips? I printed the charts for las vegas strip 2 and 6 deck. I was also wondering what S17,DA2,and OBO mean? Also where would you recomend playing. I woudl appreciate any advice.

S17 means the dealer Stands on all 17s.
H17 means the dealer hits a soft 17 (like Ace,6).

DA2 means you are allowed to double any 2-card total.
(Some games restrict doubling to hands that total 10 & 11.)

OBO means Original Bets Only are at risk to a dealer blackjack.
This is also known as the US hole-card rule. Many casinos outside the US use a different rule where if you split or double, it is possible to lose multiple bets to a dealer blackjack. OBO means that can't happen.

By all means walk through the strip Casinos. The Venetian has an indoor canal, New York, New York has a rollercoaster, MGM, live Lions. If you want to play Blackjack for the first time take a cab or bus to Freemont Street. You can most always find $5 minimum tables, and sometimes less. There is no need for a new player to start out at $15 or $25 tables while you are still learning basic strategy; that could prove to be a very expensive lesson.

I would suggest playing single or two deck games at The Plaza, Vegas Club, maybe The Golden Nugget. These are all within walking distance under the canopy of Freemont street.

Practise economically until you get Basic Strategy down pat, honestly down pat --no mistakes. This took me several years. Then pick out a card counting system. Right now, alot of players are using a counting system called HI-OPT 2. Which ever counting system you pick, stay with it and practice, practice, then practice some more. Some Basic Strategy rules also change based on the "count." Practice using BS based on the count.

I started out playing Blackjack when I was 21 in Atlantic City. Did'nt know a this about BS or counting, and usually lost a bundle. Spent years loosing money until I finally bought a book on Blackjack with a very basic, all-purpose BS chart in it. Have since read several more.

I don't know Kevin Blackwood from a hole in the ground. If I have ever played at a table with him, I did not know it. For me, the most powerful and profitable book I ever read was Blackwoods "Playing Blackjack Like The Pros." I read it several times followed his suggestions and have since started winning, now in the five digits. I highly recommend it. Wish I had the tools available when I was 21 that you have available at this very web-site. Good Luck.

If you are staying on the strip,Slots of Fun and the Sahara have lowlimit BJ,as does the Stratsphere.
I"d suggest you pickup a copy of The American Casino
Guide(about $15) which has plenty of coupons for meals, rooms and betting.
While you should try to learn BS,keep in mind that you can use a "Cheatsheet",available everywhere for$2

What happenbs when you hit to say an 8 and get a 4 so you have 12 then do you play it out like a hard 12? How do you play when situations such as those arise?

Yep. A 4+4+4 hand is the same as an 8+4 hand for BS. It is a hard hand; a soft hand is one with an ace. For example, A5 would be a soft 16, and if you hit and got a 2, you'd have a soft 18.

Kevin Blackwoods Book" Play Blackjack like the Pros " is excellant, I like the way Kevin breaks down all of basic Stategy down into four simple lessons, and is available on this site as well, the book Zengrifter recommends I am sure is good too. The point being is you can learn a lot more from a book that will greatly improve your odds. There is a great strategy trainer Practice Game on this site, and another non-down load game that is great to practice and learn Basic Srategy on is http://www.hitorstand.net. If you can take 30 minutes a day practicing on these sites you will have BS down in a couple of weeks, inwhich is absolute you master BS before you set down at the table. Good Luck

Welcome to the game bosco.Your best chance starting out I think would be to form a plan, bet within your bank roll limit and dont start partying till after you have finished your playing. Use the resorces at this site especially the free BJ game. Lisen to the wise folks who post here and consider there advice.Last thing is to read up on the subject. They can recommend books at this site. Of the many books I have read on the subject one that has helped me the most is Blackjack Bluebook two. Hav fun and kick butt.:)

The math will also throw you when you sit at a table. The game moves quickly and the math will slow you down. Say you have an ace/3 against a dealer 9. In your mind, you are thinking i have a 4 or a soft fourteen. You take a card and get a 9. Now you are thinking 4 plus nine is 13, my soft fourteen, with a 9 is 23, so that won't work, so now you play the hard 13 and take another card and get a 7. Whew, now you have 20 against a dealer nine. That went well. The dealer flips a 3 for a total of 12, flips a 4 for a total of 16, then flips a 5 and before you can finish adding, the dealer scoops up your bet and your cards. At the same time, you are watching and doing the math for all the other players. When you have not done simple addition since you were in school, it is tough to get back in the swing. Granted you are only adding to 21, but those aces change it up. The strategy trainer, does the math for you, this will not help. Try to ignore the trainer's math and do your own. Everyone else stop laughing at me. I am just being honest.

Just another suggestion reiterated:

It is lots cheaper in the long run to purchase your drinks at the nudey bar AFTER you are finished playing Blackjack, than soaking up free ones at the casino. Please trust us on this one. I once gave back $9000 in winnings one night when I was in my twenties because I was too juiced up on free scotch to get up and leave. This really happened! I really did that!! I was that weak and stupid! Still can't believe I did that!!!

I have not accepted a comped drink since that hidous night. And the few times since that I have won it, I never again gave back $9000 in winnings!

Sorry for preaching, but I never got this warning when I was starting out. Good Luck!

I was ready to drink my way into positive expectation. Do you all have any casino favorites. I am going to Vegas in march should that be enough time to master BS if I preactice online?

Yes that'll be enough time to practice and master BS.

Are drinks free in Vegas? They're not even close to being free at the casinos in Alberta, probably about $5. In high limits they give you like a buck off the regular price but thats it and I don't play high limit. I don't drink while I'm playing so I'm sure it helps my play, and saves me money, but I might be tempted if they were free!

Yeah, they will ply you with booze! I generally wait until I'm close to finished playing before accepting one or, I'll get a beer and nurse it for an hour or so. Usually though, I just order water. It's so "dry" in Vegas that I need a lot of water to keep from dehydrating.

All drinks including all alchol are complimentry to anyone gambling in all casinos in the US to my knowledge. I was at one Casino that provided free drinks even if you were not gambling. However a 1.00 tip is expected for each drink, and moderation of alchol consumption for the serious gambler is a part of the strategy.
