Once betting time ends, a dealer spins the ball on a double zero wheel.

3 35:1

Settle the spin

A straight up win pays 35 to 1, the same as on a 37 pocket wheel, and the five number bet pays 6 to 1. Even money and 2 to 1 bets lose on 0 and 00.

Two green pockets

American Roulette is Playtech’s live dealer game on a double zero wheel: the numbers 1 to 36 plus 0 and 00, 38 pockets in all. Playtech launched it in July 2019 as a premium table in its Grand Royale room and describes it as carrying a higher margin than European roulette. The payouts are the standard ones, so a straight up win pays 35 to 1 even though the wheel has one more pocket than a single zero wheel.

The five number bet

This table adds a bet a single zero wheel does not have: one chip covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, paying 6 to 1. Five winning pockets out of 38 at 6 to 1 work out at a 92.11% return, below the 94.7% of every other bet. Five straight up bets on the same numbers cover the same pockets at the ordinary 94.7%.

What the 94.7% means

Playtech’s rules give the game a 94.7% return. That is the return on every bet except the five number bet: on straight ups, splits, dozens, columns and even money bets, the two green pockets are the house’s share, 2 in 38. That is close to double the 2.70% edge of a single zero table. Playtech’s lobby lists Live American Roulette tables for Pennsylvania and West Virginia as well as an international American Roulette table.

The math behind American Roulette

The wheel has 38 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 and two green pockets, 0 and 00. The game's rules list every bet and its payout. Every figure below comes from those numbers: the house edge is worked out exactly from the payouts and the pockets.

Try it: place your bets

Tap a number for a straight up bet, a line between two numbers for a split, a corner for four numbers, or the edge next to the dozens for a street or six line. Add as many bets as you like.

000321654987121110151413181716212019242322272625302928333231363534

The green pockets are not red, black, odd, even, high or low, so every outside bet loses when one lands. That is where the house edge comes from.

"A fair price" is the payout that would make a bet break even over time: the pockets it loses on for each pocket it wins on. Every payout here is below it. No RTP figures are published; these are worked out exactly from the payouts and the 38 pockets.

One green pocket out of 37. $1 on red for 100 spins costs about $2.70 on average.

    Double zero, 38 pockets

    5.26% Hausvorteil

Two green pockets out of 38, almost double the cost: about $5.26 per 100 spins of $1 on red. The five number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) costs even more, 7.89%.

Why the five number bet costs more

Every ordinary bet here returns 94.74%. The five number bet is the exception: it covers 5 pockets, so a fair price would be 6.6 to 1, but it pays 6 to 1 and costs 7.89%. It is the one bet on the table to avoid.

Is there a American Roulette strategy?

No. The second zero cuts every ordinary bet to a 94.7% return, and nothing you do changes that. The one choice that matters is to leave the five number bet alone.

The five number bet is the only dear bet

It pays 6 to 1 on 5 pockets, a 92.11% return. Straight up bets on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 cover the same five numbers at the ordinary 94.7%.

Betting on 0 or 00 costs the same as any number

Each green pocket is just one more number at 35 to 1, priced like every other straight up at 94.7%.
