Mir (МИР) is Russia's national payment card system, created in 2015 as a domestic alternative to Visa and Mastercard. Following international sanctions in 2022 that cut off Russian banks from Visa and Mastercard networks, Mir became the primary card payment system for Russian consumers. Mir was developed by the National Payment Card System (NSPK), which is owned by the Central Bank of Russia. It was created in response to concerns about Russia's dependence on international payment networks after Visa and Mastercard briefly suspended service to several Russian banks in 2014 over Crimea-related sanctions.
After comprehensive Western sanctions in 2022, Mir became essential for domestic card payments in Russia. Today, over 200 million Mir cards are in circulation, and the system handles the vast majority of domestic card transactions in Russia. International acceptance is limited to a handful of countries (Turkey, Vietnam, some CIS states), though sanctions pressure has further reduced this.
