American Roulette from Pragmatic Play uses a wheel with 38 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36, a single zero and a double zero. The payouts are the familiar ones, 35 to 1 for a straight up win down to 1 to 1 for red or black, but because there is one more losing pocket for every bet, the house keeps more of each stake.

The five number bet

The American layout adds a five number bet, which Pragmatic’s rules call the Five Line, covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 and paying 6 to 1. A fair price would be 6.6 to 1, so it is the most expensive bet on the table, with a 7.89% edge.

What it costs

Pragmatic’s help leaves the return figures to each casino’s settings, but the payouts and the 38 pockets fix the price exactly: every ordinary bet returns 94.74%, a 5.26% house edge, and the five number bet returns 92.11%. A single zero table, such as Pragmatic’s standard Roulette, costs 2.70% on the same bets.

The math behind American Roulette

The wheel has 38 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 and two green pockets, 0 and 00. The game's rules list every bet and its payout. Every figure below comes from those numbers: the house edge is worked out exactly from the payouts and the pockets.

Why the five number bet costs more

Every ordinary bet here returns 94.74%. The five number bet is the exception: it covers 5 pockets, so a fair price would be 6.6 to 1, but it pays 6 to 1 and costs 7.89%. It is the one bet on the table to avoid.

Is there a American Roulette strategy?

No. Every ordinary bet carries a 5.26% edge and the five number bet 7.89%, and no betting pattern moves either figure.

Every ordinary payout is set as if the wheel had 36 numbers. The two green pockets are the edge: 2 in 38, or 5.26%.
