iDEAL is an interbank payment scheme operated by Currence, a Dutch payment infrastructure company. Launched in 2005, it became the most widely used payment method in the Netherlands for online purchases. At a casino, it works as a redirect: you initiate a payment on the casino's site, get sent to your own bank's internet banking environment, confirm the payment there, and come back with your balance updated.
The casino never sees your banking credentials. You authenticate entirely within your bank's own system, which is a large part of why iDEAL has remained trusted for two decades. Every major Dutch bank participates.

The process is quick and starts entirely on the casino side. You do not need to log into your bank beforehand or have anything prepared.
iDEAL only moves money from your account outward. There is no mechanism for a casino to push funds back to you through iDEAL. When you win and want to cash out, the casino sends the money directly to your Dutch bank account via SEPA bank transfer. You provide your IBAN during the casino's KYC verification and the casino uses that for payouts. This typically takes one to three business days.

Yes. Online gambling has been legal and regulated in the Netherlands since October 2021 under the Remote Gambling Act (Wet kansspelen op afstand). The regulator is the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), which licences operators, sets player protection rules, and takes action against unlicensed sites.

The full transition to Wero is expected to complete by 2027, at which point iDEAL as a standalone brand will be retired. Wero does not introduce withdrawal support.
The most common reason is that the casino does not hold a valid KSA licence. Dutch banks are required to block iDEAL payments to unlicensed operators under KSA enforcement agreements. If you are trying to deposit at a site that is not KSA-licensed, the payment will likely be rejected at the bank level. Check the casino's licence status before attempting to deposit again.
