IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) is India's 24/7 real-time bank transfer system. If you have a bank account in India, you almost certainly have access to IMPS, and some international online casinos list it as a deposit and withdrawal option for Indian players.
Before you try to use it for a casino deposit, there's a practical reality to understand: many Indian banks actively block transactions to offshore gambling sites, and IMPS transfers are not exempt from this. The page below explains how IMPS works, what to expect at casinos, and what your alternatives are.

IMPS stands for Immediate Payment Service. It's an interbank electronic funds transfer system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the same body that runs UPI and RuPay. IMPS launched in 2010 and was notable for being available around the clock, every day of the year, including bank holidays. That 24/7 availability was a significant advantage before UPI existed.
To send money via IMPS, you can use either of two methods:
At online casinos, IMPS is generally used as a direct bank transfer option. You send funds from your bank's internet banking or mobile app directly to the casino's Indian bank account. The upper limit is typically INR 5,00,000 (five lakh) per transaction, though some banks set lower limits of INR 2,00,000 or less. Check your specific bank's IMPS limits before attempting a large transfer.
Withdrawals via IMPS follow the reverse process. You submit a withdrawal request in the casino cashier and provide your bank account number and IFSC code. The casino sends the funds to your account. Processing times vary by casino, but crypto and e-wallet withdrawals are generally faster. IMPS withdrawals from casinos can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days depending on the operator.
Bank blocking is common. Many Indian banks flag or decline outgoing transfers to overseas gambling merchants. If your IMPS transfer is rejected, this is usually why. Some banks allow it; many don't. There's no guaranteed workaround through the same bank. Players who run into this typically switch to e-wallets like Skrill or Neteller, which can accept funding from Indian bank accounts via different routing and then be used at the casino.
IMPS predates UPI and has been largely replaced by UPI for everyday payments in India. UPI is faster to initiate (you scan a QR code or enter a UPI ID), has wider acceptance, and is the default payment rail for most Indian fintech apps today. For casino deposits, where supported, UPI tends to be the preferred route.
IMPS still has relevance for larger transfers, for players whose bank doesn't support UPI at certain casinos, or for direct bank-to-bank transfers where the casino provides account details rather than a UPI ID. If you have the choice between IMPS and UPI at a casino cashier, UPI is usually simpler.
| Feature | IMPS | UPI |

| Per-transaction limit | Up to INR 5,00,000 | Up to INR 1,00,000 (varies by bank/app) |
| Ease of use | Requires account details | Simpler, QR or ID based |
| Casino acceptance | Moderate | Moderate to growing |
| Bank blocking risk | Common for offshore gambling | Common for offshore gambling |
India does not have a single national law governing online gambling. The Public Gambling Act 1867 predates the internet and doesn't address online play directly. Several states have passed their own gambling legislation, but for the most part Indian players use offshore-licensed international casinos in a legal grey area.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has guidelines that can lead banks to block overseas gambling transactions, even though there's no blanket prohibition on players themselves. This is why IMPS transfers to some casino accounts get flagged or declined at the bank level, even when the player's intent is legal under their state laws.

| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| Skrill | E-wallet widely accepted at international casinos. Accepts funding from Indian bank accounts. A popular workaround for players whose banks block direct casino transfers. |
| Neteller | Similar to Skrill. Accepted at a large number of international casinos, supports INR, and serves Indian players. |
| Bitcoin | Crypto is not subject to bank blocking in the same way. Some Indian players use Bitcoin specifically because it bypasses the bank-level restrictions on gambling transactions. |
| Visa / Mastercard | Card payments work at many international casinos, though Indian-issued cards can also be blocked by the card issuer for overseas gambling merchants. |
Indian banks frequently block transfers to overseas gambling merchants. This happens at the bank level based on the merchant category code or recipient account classification. If your transfer was declined, it's almost certainly a bank restriction rather than anything you did wrong. Try an e-wallet like Skrill or Neteller as an alternative, since those route payments differently.
The standard NPCI limit is INR 5,00,000 (five lakh) per transaction. However, individual banks may apply lower limits. Check your bank's specific IMPS limit in their internet banking settings or by calling your bank before making a large casino deposit.
Yes. IMPS operates 24/7, including bank holidays and weekends. This was its original selling point over NEFT, which used to operate in batches during banking hours only. For casino deposits, you can initiate an IMPS transfer at any time and it will go through instantly.
If the casino offers both, UPI is generally simpler to use since you only need a UPI ID or QR code rather than full bank account details. Both face the same risk of bank-level blocking for overseas gambling. Try whichever your bank is less likely to flag, and have a backup e-wallet option set up just in case.
India doesn't have a single national law banning online casino play, and no law specifically prohibits players from gambling online at offshore-licensed sites. Whether a particular state's gambling laws apply to online play at foreign operators is not clearly established. Banks blocking transactions is a separate matter from legality for the player. See is online blackjack legal in India for a fuller picture.
IMPS is a functional casino payment method for Indian players when the bank cooperates. The 24/7 availability and high transfer limits are genuine advantages, and the fact it supports both deposits and withdrawals makes it more versatile than a lot of localised options.
The practical problem is bank-level blocking. A significant number of Indian banks decline outgoing transfers to offshore casino accounts. If your bank is among them, IMPS simply won't work regardless of which casino you try. For players in that situation, Skrill or Neteller are the most reliable alternatives, with broader casino acceptance and different payment routing that tends to bypass the bank restrictions.
