Taxes on winnings
The licensed app reports qualifying wins to the IRS on a W-2G, so the income is on record whether or not you file for it. All gambling winnings are taxable federally (IRS Topic 419) and under the Rhode Island income tax, which reaches 5.99% at the top (Rhode Island Division of Taxation).
Rhode Island has a rule that catches people out: it does not let you deduct gambling losses against your winnings, so you can finish the year even and still owe state tax on the winning sessions. That is harsher than federal treatment, where the One Big Beautiful Bill Act at least allows 90% of losses to be deducted from the 2026 tax year. Keep session-level records; offshore winnings arrive with no paperwork at all, and the tax is owed just the same.
