แพ is the British branch of the 21 family, older than casino blackjack and played with its own vocabulary: you twist instead of hit, stick instead of stand, and buy to raise your bet mid-hand. The two rules that define it: the dealer’s cards are hidden until the end, and the dealer wins all ties. In exchange, the two best hands pay double.

The rules that matter

• No dealer upcard. Both dealer cards stay hidden until everyone has played, so there is no “dealer shows a 6” to steer your decisions. Every choice comes from your own hand.
• Pontoon pays 2:1. An ace plus a ten-value card is a pontoon, the best hand in the game, paid at 2:1 rather than blackjack’s 3:2.
• The five-card trick pays 2:1. Any five-card hand that has not busted beats everything except a pontoon. Chasing it is often correct, which makes pontoon draws far more aggressive than blackjack.
• The dealer wins all ties. This is where the casino makes its money back. A tied 20 loses. It changes how you value middling made hands.
• You must twist below 15. You cannot stick on a total of 14 or less; the game forces the aggression its payouts reward.
• Buying raises your stake. Unlike a blackjack double, buying does not lock you to one card in the classic game; online versions vary in exactly how buying works, so read the table’s help panel.

Strategy: forget your blackjack chart

Pontoon strategy looks nothing like blackjack strategy, for three stacked reasons: no dealer upcard to react to, ties that lose, and a five-card payout worth chasing. Standing on totals a blackjack chart would keep, or refusing a fifth card on a small total, are real mistakes here. Where to play for real money

Several software houses ship a casino pontoon, and the details (deck count, buying rules, what a tied pontoon does) differ between them, so check the in-game rules panel before betting.
